They're a gnoll, on the run from the gods of undeath and slaughter whose eyes they stole so they could do magic. They do fire magic- the bones at their sides are the hafts which she makes flame axes out of. (The blades of the axes are the flames.) (Fun fact: Hyenas are actually feliforms! Not canids.)
